UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates the efforts of the United Nations System to ensure that commitments on gender equality translate into action. To accomplish this mandate, UN Women partners with government, the private sector and Non-Governmental Organizations in furtherance of gender equality.

UN Women’s programmatic work to support women’s economic empowerment in West and Central Africa is centered around four areas:

  • Improving women’s access to climate resilient agricultural value chains;
  • Promoting and strengthening women entrepreneurship;
  • Enhancing women’s income security and social protection; and
  • Engendering fiscal stimulus packages and COVID-19 recovery strategies.

The Women’s Economic Empowerment Team of UN Women’s Regional Office for West and Central Africa is looking to recruit an intern to support the unit’s work on social protection, innovation, and Women’s Empowerment Principles and private sector development.


In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment.


Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities

The intern will report to UN Women’s Regional Policy Advisor for Women’s Economic Empowerment and is expected to work alongside and support Women’s Economic Empowerment specialists in the team with the following tasks:

  • Conduct targeted research on subject matters, sectors and countries in the region
  • Provide editorial assistance and draft project documents, reports, proposals, power point presentations, etc.
  • Assist with resource mobilization efforts, including drafting of a private sector engagement strategy for the region to support women’s economic empowerment;
  • Provide coordination and logistical support in the organization of webinars, and workshops for capacity building or project implementation purposes;

Functional Competencies:

  • Excellent analytical skills on gender and development including use of quantitative and qualitative research methods;
  • Excellent drafting skills in English and French;
  • Excellent power point/other software presentations skills
  • Interest in the work of UN Women and to the ideals of the UN Charter;
  • Computer literate in standard software applications and familiarity with internet-based research;
  • Energetic self-starter with multi-tasking abilities and discipline with deadlines;

Required Skills and Experience

Education & Eligibility

  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher) or equivalent in Social Sciences, Political Science, Development, Public Administration, Gender;
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent) or equivalent in Social Sciences, Political Science, Development, Public Administration, Gender;
  • Be enrolled in a mandatory national service programme of which the internship may form a part;
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
  • Be enrolled in a professional traineeship program which is part of a postgraduate degree programme of which the internship may form part.


Fluent in English and French
